Manchester United were expected to have it tough against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, considering their recent record against the Red Devils.
Despite some questionable refereeing, United emerged 4-2 victors at Old Trafford with Matheus Cunha opening his account for the club while Casemiro got one and Bryan Mbeumo grabbed a brace.
Despite his impressive form, question marks had been raised about the ex-Wolves forward due to his lack of goals and assists up till this point.
And as revealed by the 26-year-old after the game, it had been weighing heavily on his mind. But the wonder strike against the Seagulls will go a long way in helping him rebuild his confidence moving forward.
His teammates were quick to joke about it as soon as he found the back of the net, with the attacking midfielder delighted that he could contribute to a famous win.
“Yeah, finally!,” said the Brazil international in comments relayed by the club website. “Wow. I worked so hard for this. The win for starters, to come in and I’m so happy.
“But of course I want a little bit more contribution and then today’s coming, [but] we win and then everything’s fine.”
On whether the goal drought was affecting him, the versatile attacker said, “Of course. We have little actions but when you play in the front, you have to score goals.
“I have to have more contributions. But the last time I said this, if my participation is to help the team and then we start doing well, I’ll be happy also.
“But of course with this goal, everyone will be around me to push me. The guys started to joke and then said: ‘Wow, you can score!’. These things happen and everyone pushes me and I feel so happy to be here.”
Three wins on the trot under Ruben Amorim for the first time has meant the team has risen to fourth in the Premier League table.
Who would’ve thought that was possible given the initial difficulties and the frenzied media trial asking for the Portuguese tactician to be sacked.
But as Matheus Cunha explained, the team remains fully behind their head coach, and they are delighted for him as Amorim often gets overstressed when the results do not go the team’s way.
“Everyone has full confidence in Ruben Amorim. He is someone that pushes us forward. He is always very stressed until we start to win, and then he improves every day. Of course, he deserves this, Man United deserve this.
“This needs to be the normal for this club. I am so happy to be a part of this. Amazing day, I will remember this.”
Now for the United No.10 to keep his scoring run going and for the 20-time English league champions to keep climbing up the table.
