Go Ahead Eagles fans would have been concerned when Oliver Antman left last summer. The Finnish international was incredible last season as the side shocked Dutch football to win the domestic cup. Antman left for Rangers having scored six goals and provided an impressive 16 assists in 36 games. This season, Go Ahead Eagles have struggled in balancing domestic football and European football, but in Mathis Suray, one player has stepped up to help lessen to blow of losing Antman. Furthermore, the Fin’s departure has opened the door for Suray to become a key player for the side this season.
Suray may not have as many assists as Antman did over the course of the season, but after a brace against Fortuna Sittard, he has scored eight goals this season across all competitions. This is already three more than he managed in 36 total games last season. Suray joined Go Ahead back in the summer of 2024 after four seasons with Dordrecht. The former Anderlecht man earned his way to the Eredivisie with a fantastic 2023/2024 season. During that year, Suray scored 14 goals and grabbed seven assists in 42 games.
So far this season, Suray leads the side with his eight goals. With a contract running until 2027 as well, Go Ahead have complete control over his future and when they would be willing to cash in if sides come calling. Given their success last year, more eyes will be on them and that gives Suray a chance to showcase his talents. At just 24-years-old, there is still plenty of time to Suray to improve even more.
Go Ahead should ensure they keep Suray this January so they can avoid being dragged into any relegation scrap. After the latest round of the Eredivisie, the side sit in 12th, six points above the relegation play-off spot currently occupied by NAC Breda.
