Peñarol will pin hopes on Matías Arezo, poor at Grêmio but prolific back home, when they visit Corinthians in the Conmebol Libertadores at Neo Química Arena on Thursday.

According to Globo.com, the 23-year-old has eight goals in 15 this season and 20 in 39 since returning last year, despite the team being winless in five. He remains a Grêmio player on loan until December, with Peñarol expected to buy him.

Grêmio signed him in July 2024 for €3 million for 50% of his rights from Granada. The potential departure of Diego Costa, which only happened at year end, and the swift arrival of Braithwaite squeezed his minutes.

He failed to score in 12 outings in 2024, then logged 25 more the next season, 12 as a starter, for six goals. A missed penalty against Sportivo Luqueño in the Sudamericana came during a nine-game drought that extended by two before he left.

Frustrated by limited runs and with his first child born in early 2025, he pushed to return to Montevideo, even saying so in the Uruguayan press. He rejoined Peñarol on loan in July, exactly one year after arriving in Porto Alegre.

A River Plate product, he moved to Granada at 19, struggled amid relegations, yet struck 21 in 40 on an earlier Peñarol loan. Under coach Diego Aguirre he initially seemed a poor fit, but form kept him central. A recent muscle scare showed no injury, so he could feature at 21:00.
