Sunderland have been linked with Roma winger Matias Soule, with Fulham also in the frame. The Black Cats are chasing a first summer signing as they prepare for a first ever Europa League campaign. According to Sunderland Echo, they have explored the 23-year-old’s situation.
To date, business has centred on departures, with Eliezer Mayenda joining Rennes, Dan Neil moving to Rangers and Nazariy Rusyn signing for Karpaty Lviv.
Soule came through Kimberley and Velez Sarsfield before joining Juventus in 2020. He featured for Juve’s Under-23s, made his senior debut later in 2021, and scored his first goal against Sampdoria the following season. He totalled 21 senior appearances for Juventus.
He shone on loan at Frosinone in 2023/24 with 11 goals and three assists. He then joined Roma in a reported £24m deal and has since produced 12 goals and 13 assists in 81 games across two seasons.
Internationally, he has not yet been capped at senior level. He was called up for Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Chile in September 2024 but did not play in a 3-0 win, and was named in the initial 55-man list for this summer’s finals before missing the final 25.
Soule signed a five-year contract on arriving at Roma in 2024, so has three years remaining. He is represented by Martin Ariel Guastadisegno and said, “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know”. There have been suggestions his representative has travelled to England to meet Sunderland and Fulham, and that Roma could seek around £30m.
