There has been a huge amount of speculation about Chelsea’s plans for their goalkeeping situation this summer – now, finally, we have some information from a really good source.
The Daily Telegraph’s Matt Law has followed the team for a long time, and has the best sources at the club. When he says something specific, we tend to believe it. And today he’s dropped a full piece on Chelsea’s situation in goal.
It’s been a problem position for Chelsea for years, and this season has been a disaster. Robert Sanchez was dropped after a series of mistakes, but has now been restored as first choice after replacement Filip Jorgensen struggled too.
There are two other options waiting in the wings, and it looks like they’ll now have their chance.

Djordje Petrovic played for a chunk of last season, taking over from an injured Sanchez. He was sent off on loan to Strasbourg this season, slightly surprisingly, with Law saying in this piece that it was because he was “deemed the wrong profile of goalkeeper for head coach Enzo Maresca.”
The Serbia international has shown that to be nonsense, and has been one of the most highly rated goalies in Europe this season at our sister club. His stats are phenomenal, and it’s not surprise that Law says he will get another chance in our first team at the Club World Cup.
The other player who will get his chance is young Mike Penders, who was signed last summer but remained with Genk, where he’s come through the academy. He’s now established himself as their first choice keeper, and will hopefully get another 10 or so starts under his belt before also joining the squad in the USA for the CWC.
As for Sanchez and Jorgensen, their future is less certain. Sanchez has been dropped as first choice for three seasons in a row now. Jorgensen probably needs a loan somewhere to get regular football and build his confidence.
