Chelsea’s January transfer activity was predicted to be pretty limited, and it’s proving to be just that so far.
The Blues have been heavily linked with bids to sign a new central defender, but so far their main activity at the back has been recalling Aaron Anselmino from Borussia Dortmund.

Aaron Anselmino looks sad after his recall from Dortmund.
It’s a slightly mysterious move, but Matt Law’s piece on our transfers for the Daily Telegraph attempts to explain more. He notes that Anselmino is helping to provide some cover while Tosin is out injured, but given that’s a pretty short term problem, we can’t imagine that was the real reason the young Argentine was brought back.
Law points out that Anselmino could be used as a makeweight in a deal for one of our defender targets, with Rennes apparently wanting a player back for Jeremy Jacquet should we buy him. It’s also suggested that Anselmino could go to sister club Strasbourg.
“Were a move for Jacquet to fall through, then Anselmino could even stay at Stamford Bridge,” he concludes. Right now, that seems the most likely option, as we don’t see a player coming in as things stand.
Is sitting on the bench at Stamford Bridge really going to help him or us? It doesn’t feel like it.
Law also covered the situation with Jacquet – Chelsea want to buy and Rennes are willing to sell, but it’s hard to see the two sides reaching a compromise in the limited time left in the window.
We always said that part of the problem with both Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this season was that Enzo Maresca’s system wasn’t set up for them to do well. That’s changing now – we’re seeing success on the pitch and JP explained why.
