Ahead of the Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Bayern (Tuesday, 9pm, live on Amazon Prime Video), Sky pundit Lothar Matthäus has commented on Munich’s current strength in depth in his column – and explains why he believes the German record champions are ahead in the head-to-head.

After the 3-0 win against Bayer Leverkusen, FC Bayern are still on course for a record – 15 games, 15 wins. For Matthäus, this dominance is currently unprecedented: „A lot of things have to come together for the opponents to leave the pitch as non-losers against Bayern. It’s only up to Bayern themselves to extend their winning streak.“

He praised the team’s mentality and humility in particular: „They’re not arrogant, they’re still humble. The running performance is outstanding, everything is carried out with maximum intensity in every position.“

Kompany’s courage is rewarded

Coach Vincent Kompany has played a big part in the current run of success. „He showed courage against Leverkusen,“ said Matthäus. „Kane, Diaz and Olise might have liked to play from the start, but it’s also about the atmosphere in the team. Kompany gave them confidence by fielding them against Leverkusen, who have been in good form recently – and that was exactly right.“

Kompany has managed to keep the balance in the team: „He always has to choose the right first eleven and keep the others happy. He’s done that brilliantly so far!“

Matthäus believes Bayern will win

Matthäus believes that FC Bayern are currently clearly ahead of the competition, not only nationally but also internationally: „It looks like complete superiority – not only in the Bundesliga, but also in the Champions League.“ Although PSG have enormous quality as defending champions, the difference is clear for Matthäus: „Paris have no Kane, no Olise, no Kimmich and no Neuer.“

He also sees Bayern as „well-rehearsed and in the flow“, while PSG have already dropped points in Ligue 1.

Even though he describes PSG as the „next big indicator“, Matthäus is certain: „Paris are definitely not the favourites.“ His tip for Tuesday evening: „I’m betting on a 2:1 win for Bayern.“

According to the record international, Munich are not only in top form, but also mentally ready for the top match: „They know that they have always caused PSG major problems in recent years – and they will do so again this time.“
