Manchester United said in a statement on Friday that Matthijs De Ligt has undergone back surgery and will miss the World Cup with the Netherlands.
The 26-year-old centre-back has been out since 30 November 2025. The club expects him to return at the start of 2026-27 after beginning a new phase of rehabilitation.

After six months of treatment and attempts to return to top level, surgery proved the only remaining option. He is disappointed not to have helped the team over that period and to be missing the World Cup.
United are third in the Premier League.
They have qualified for next season’s Champions League.
