Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has expressed his hope that Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain at Liverpool beyond this season, as all three players face ongoing contract uncertainty.
The trio played pivotal roles in Klopp’s nine-year tenure at Anfield, helping the club secure multiple major honours, including the Premier League and Champions League.
However, with their contracts set to expire at the end of the season, they can speak to overseas clubs as negotiations over new deals have yet to be concluded, leaving their futures in doubt.
Speaking during a Q&A session at his unveiling as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer, Klopp was asked about Salah’s future before addressing Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold’s situations.
“I hope he stays. He is the biggest striker Liverpool had in modern times—obviously there were other great strikers, but he’s fantastic in every way,” Klopp said of Salah.
“A fantastic player, a fantastic human being, an outstanding athlete, and the best ambassador his country could have. He’s fantastic in pretty much all departments, so I hope he will stay at Liverpool.”
When asked about Liverpool captain Van Dijk and vice-captain Alexander-Arnold, linked with a move to Real Madrid, Klopp admitted he was relieved not to be in charge of their contract talks.
“I am so happy that I am not in charge of that situation,” he said. “Why should I do that now? Good luck. From my point of view, I would like all of them to extend their contracts. They haven’t told me anything. Maybe I should text them.”
Klopp knows all three players better than anyone, having signed Van Dijk and Salah for Liverpool and handing Alexander-Arnold his first senior appearance. Under his guidance, the trio developed into world-class talents and played key roles in Liverpool’s resurgence.
Salah, in particular, formed a historic partnership with Klopp. No player scored more goals (211) or provided more assists (88) under the German than Salah, who also played the most minutes under his management (28,267). Together, they won every major trophy available, cementing their legacy at Anfield.
While discussing Liverpool’s contract situation, Klopp also addressed his future in football. Though he ruled out managing any teams owned by Red Bull, he did not close the door on a potential return to coaching.
“I will not be a coach of a Red Bull team. That’s a clear commitment,” he said. “But I can’t say I will never be a coach again in my life.”
As the uncertainty over Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold’s futures continues, Liverpool’s hierarchy faces a defining moment. Losing all three players on free transfers would be a major setback, and with Klopp publicly backing their extensions, the pressure is on the club to act swiftly.
For now, the situation remains unresolved. But with the players’ contracts running down, Liverpool must make their move soon or risk saying goodbye to three of the most important figures in their recent success.
