Real Madrid trumped Manchester City in both legs of the Champions League playoff tie, most recently grabbing a 3-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu. Kylian Mbappe’s stunning hat-trick secured their passage to the round of 16 of the competition, where they will take on Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen, depending on the way Friday’s draw pans out.
Having already won 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium in last week’s first leg, the Whites came into the game firmly as favourites and ruthlessly got the job done in front of their supporters. In eliminating City, Carlo Ancelotti made sure to have Pep Guardiola’s number in the European Cup for the fourth time in five attempts, with the Italian overcoming his rival with relative ease across the two legs.
As Real Madrid await their next opponent’s identity in the competition, here is a look at their player ratings from the second leg against Man City.
Goalkeeper – Thibaut Courtois – 7.5/10
Courtois distributed the ball well with Madrid playing out from the back and made a handful of easy saves. He was unfortunate to not have a clean sheet after Nico Gonzalez’s stoppage time goal.
Right Back – Federico Valverde – 9/10
Valverde put in a pristine performance once more as he dominated the right flank. He was all over Bernardo Silva and propelled the team forward superbly with his work rate on and off the ball.
Centre Back – Raul Asencio – 9/10
Asencio was brilliant and nullified Omar Marmoush’s threat throughout the match. Besides winning several duels and tackles against the Egyptian, he also provided a delightful assist for Mbappe’s first goal.
Centre Back – Antonio Rudiger – 7/10
Rudiger’s return from injury was fairly uneventful. With Asencio keeping tab on Marmoush, the German did his handful of defensive duties well given Madrid’s dominance on the ball and in the higher areas of the pitch.
Left Back – Ferland Mendy – 8/10
Once more, the only criticism about Mendy is his lack of contributions higher up the pitch. Defensively, however, there was nothing to complain about with the Frenchman nonchalantly keeping Phil Foden out of proceedings.
Defensive Midfielder – Aurelien Tchouameni – 8.5/10
Another fantastic display from Tchouameni in his preferred role as he helped in building up from the back to good effect and nullified City’s creativity through Ilkay Gundogan and Nico Gonzalez with timely interceptions.
Right Midfielder – Jude Bellingham – 8/10
Bellingham lived up to his standard and worked hard all night. He was vital in creating the chance for the second goal and without the ball, he kept track of Nico Gonzalez’s runs into the first third.
Left Midfielder – Dani Ceballos – 8/10
Ceballos did his job without much to worry about. With the Merengues dominating possession, his distribution within close range was vital and the Spaniard succeeded in doing so with a 90% passing accuracy.
Right Winger – Rodrygo Goes – 8.5/10
Rodrygo assisted Mbappe’s second goal with an unselfish pass. He gave Josko Gvardiol a hard time with his dribbling and footwork on the right flank, whilst working hard defensively to assist Valverde.
Striker – Kylian Mbappe – 10/10
Mbappe was the best player on the pitch due to his hat-trick, all of which were brilliant finishes. The Frenchman’s tally for the season is up to 27 now.
Left Winger – Vinicius Junior – 8/10
Vinicius had a commendable game, though there was not much to write home about him. He was happy to make runs off the ball for Mbappe to attack and showed the unselfish aspect of his game on Wednesday.
Substitutes
Eduardo Camavinga – 6/10
Camavinga’s work on the ball helped Real Madrid have better control of possession after Tchouameni was withdrawn.
Brahim Diaz – 5/10
Brahim was a spectator for much of the game with the tie already sealed with only three touches in the time he spent on the time.
Luka Modric/David Alaba/Endrick – N/A
The trio were introduced very late by Ancelotti as he looked to run down the clock.
