Real Madrid maintained their grip on the La Liga summit with hard fought 1-0 victory over Getafe on Sunday night, thanks to late strike from Kylian Mbappe that sealed 3 crucial point for Los Blancos in Matchweek 9 of the 2025 /26 season.

Despite dominating possession and creating several early chances, Xabi Alonso’s side were made to work for the win against disciplined Getafe side that defended resolutely until 2 late red card shifted the momentum decisively in Madrid’s favour.

Mbappe breaks through

Real Madrid threatened early, with Mbappe twice going close in the opening ten minutes , first denied by goalkeeper David Soria from close range, then firing narrowly wide from distance.

Getafe pushed back and appealed for penalty in the 22 minute but VAR upheld the referee’s decision to wave play on. Soria continued to frustrate the visitors producing stunning save to deny Rodrygo just before half time while David Alaba saw powerful effort also stopped.

Madrid increased their tempo after the break with substitutions bringing fresh energy — Raul Asensio replaced Alaba and Vinicius Junior came on for Franco Mastantuono.

The hosts resistance was finally broken in the 80 minute when Arda Guler split the defence with clever pass that Mbappe finished clinically into the far corner.

Getafe Collapse After Double Red

Getafe’s task became even harder when Allan Nyom was shown straight red card in the 77 minute for dangerous tackle on Vinicius just seconds after coming on.

Their misery deepened when Alex Sancris received second yellow and was sent off in the 84 minute leaving them with 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Getafe nearly snatched equaliser deep into stoppage time but Courtois produced superb save to deny Camara and preserve Madrid’s lead.

The victory lifts Real Madrid to 24 point keeping them firmly in 1st place in La Liga while Getafe remain 12th on 11 point.
