Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe recently gave a heartfelt interview on ‘El Objetivo’ with La Sexta, where he spoke openly about his motivations for joining Real Madrid and his budding relationship with teammate Vinicius Jr.

While the conversation was refreshingly candid and avoided any direct controversy, one particular quote has sparked a backlash in his homeland—mainly due to misinterpretation.

“There are things that are more important than money. It was not difficult to choose between Madrid and money.

“Money is important for sure, but for me the most important thing is to be happy and I knew it would be here,” Mbappe explained.

The quote, intended to underline his emotional connection to Real Madrid and his desire to find fulfillment beyond financial gain, was quickly spun out of context by French outlet Footmercato.

They posted the remark with a suggestive caption on social media: “Parisian fans will not like it,” implying Mbappe was taking a parting shot at PSG.

Mbappe’s fitting reply

The 26-year-old didn’t take that lightly. In a rare show of public frustration, Mbappe directly responded via his X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:

“No connection to PSG. The question was about the next step and the choice, for example, of Saudi Arabia or a club like Real Madrid.

“Focus on what happens in France, the rest is not for you because you don’t understand it. A kiss,” he wrote.

His clapback was sharp but controlled—a clear message to the media not to twist his words or fabricate tensions that don’t exist.

He made it clear that his comment was never aimed at PSG, but rather a reflection on the broader options he had on the table—such as lucrative offers from Saudi clubs—and how he chose legacy and happiness over money.

Following his response, Footmercato deleted the controversial tweet, likely realising the storm they had unintentionally provoked.
