Nunez Transfer Looms as Liverpool Plot Post-Klopp Evolution

Lynch Confirms Nunez Departure Is “One of the Few Certainties” of the Summer

In the latest Media Matters episode from Anfield Index, respected journalist David Lynch joined Dave Davis for a comprehensive conversation about Liverpool’s end-of-season form, upcoming transfers, and player futures. With the Reds preparing for life under Arne Slot, the summer rebuild is already shaping up to be significant.

Lynch didn’t hesitate when discussing Darwin Nunez’s likely exit: “One of the few certainties of the window really is that Darwin Nunez will definitely leave.” He confirmed there is “strong interest in him” and that the club is “in a good situation” because “many, many other clubs think he can work for them and will pay a decent fee.”

The prospect of an early deal is key to Liverpool’s plans. Lynch added: “If they can get him off the books in that early June window… that’s absolutely brilliant for them in terms of planning.”

Diaz Future Uncertain Despite Public Loyalty

Despite Lewis Díaz telling Colombian media, “For me I would stay at Liverpool however many years it takes,” Lynch was cautious about interpreting the sentiment. “These quotes are showing that he wants a new deal and a pay rise, absolutely,” he said.

Lynch emphasised the club’s internal debate: “It wouldn’t really make sense to massively extend his contract when he is 28 and you may be seeing the best years of him now.” While he acknowledged Díaz has had a “good season,” Lynch suggested the club’s ideal solution might be to “do one more year and then cash in.”

Liverpool’s Transfer Strategy: Frimpong Not a Priority

Transfer speculation is already rampant, but Lynch provided grounded context. On Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, he clarified: “I don’t think he will sign for Liverpool as things stand.” While acknowledging Frimpong is “an option for Liverpool” with an “easy deal to do,” Lynch believes the club isn’t currently prioritising him.

“I would believe wholeheartedly that the person I was talking to said that they would be surprised” if the deal materialised, he said. Lynch was careful to note that this doesn’t mean the move is impossible—just not likely under current circumstances.

Existing Squad Decisions Already Made

For players like Caoimhin Kelleher, Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo, the remaining matches may feel like a last audition. But Lynch dismissed that notion. “Trent himself should take the decision to pull away,” he said when discussing Alexander-Arnold’s controversial cameo and broader squad tensions.

Speaking about underperformers, he was unequivocal: “Two games from now are not going to make one jot of difference to the decisions.” The squad evaluation process, according to Lynch, has already happened throughout the season—on the pitch and at training.

Trent Controversy Overshadowed Arsenal Draw

Despite a solid performance against Arsenal, the post-match discourse was dominated by fan reaction to Trent Alexander-Arnold. Lynch observed the booing caused “a toxic atmosphere that wasn’t conducive to winning a football game.”

He shared a revealing anecdote: “I texted a good mate… one of them applauded, one of them booed, and one of them did nothing. That perfectly encapsulated to me that everyone’s going to have a different view.”

Looking Ahead to the Slot Era

As Liverpool prepare for a quiet finish, a trip to Dubai has added mystery to their final stretch. Lynch speculated: “It’s just to thank the players for what they’ve done,” and “celebrate what they’ve achieved.”

On Arne Slot’s impending stewardship, Lynch suggested major squad turnover would undermine progress: “They’ve already got so much to do… I just think managing turnover has to be a factor this summer.”

And so, as Jurgen Klopp’s reign winds down, Liverpool are already manoeuvring for their next chapter. Transfers, departures, and quiet contract negotiations will define the coming weeks—but as Lynch noted, “Liverpool should just enjoy this huge achievement.”
