Mikel Merino expressed his admiration for the contribution of Arsenal’s new arrivals during their narrow defeat to Liverpool at the weekend.
Mikel Arteta’s side strengthened significantly over the summer with several additions to the squad, though many of the new signings are still in the process of adapting to their teammates and the system. Despite this period of transition, Arsenal had begun the season strongly, winning their opening two league matches, including an impressive away victory at Manchester United.
That form gave the Gunners confidence heading into the Liverpool clash, with hopes high that they could either secure another statement win or extend their unbeaten run against top-six opposition. However, they fell short, with their 22-game streak against leading rivals coming to an end.
Although the result was disappointing, there were still positives to be drawn from the performance, particularly the displays of the new players who stepped into a difficult environment. Merino highlighted their impact, emphasising that they adapted well despite the challenging circumstances at Anfield.
As quoted by Arsenal Media, he said:
“We saw some new guys coming on the pitch under difficult circumstances, for example, Mosquera after the injury. They managed to come in these circumstances and do it as well as they could have done.
The whole team performed in a really good way, in a difficult stadium, with a lot of character. So disappointed for the loss, but lots of positives.”

Merino’s assessment reflects the broader sentiment that Arsenal’s display, while not rewarded with points, contained elements to build upon. Competing in one of the Premier League’s toughest stadiums, the squad showed determination and resilience, qualities that will be vital in the months ahead.
The defeat may have ended an impressive run, but the integration of new signings and the character displayed offered encouragement. For Arsenal, the challenge now will be to convert such performances into results, ensuring that their early promise in the league continues to develop into consistency.
