Liverpool have ended their long wait for a Merseyside derby victory in the Barclays Women’s Super League by running out 3-2 winners over Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon.

Ceri Holland netted a brace while Everton defender Martina Fernández put through her own net as Liverpool ended years of Merseyside derby misery in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Kirsty MacLean had the first opportunity for the visitors and struck the ball with her left foot, but Courtney Brosnan made a comfortable save.

At the other end, Aurora Galli made her way into the Liverpool penalty area, but Jenna Clark managed to stop the shot with a strong challenge.

Liverpool won a penalty when the ball bounced off Inma Gabarro’s arm. Holland stepped up to take the spot kick and slotted  the ball down the middle, with Brosnan having already dived right.

The Reds then got a second goal when Fernández put an Alejandra Bernabé cross into her own net.

Everton responded and Gabarro sent in a dangerous cross and found the head of Risa Shimizu, but she couldn’t get enough power on it and sent her effort wide of the goal.

Holland netted her second of the game and the third for Liverpool just before the break. She picked up the ball and curled a superb effort into the top corner.

Everton reduced the arrears just after the hour. Galli floated a free-kick straight into the back of the net.

Liverpool captain then Grace Fisk earned a second yellow card and was sent off, giving Everton increased hope of getting back into the game.

Despite having 10 players, Liverpool almost got a fourth when Jenna Clark headed the ball towards the goal, however, it bounced off Ruby Mace and Brosnan gathered the loose ball.

Zara Kramžar netted a second Everton goal in stoppage time. Galli played a clever pass into the penalty area and Kramžar had the space to slot a finish past Jennifer Falk.

Everton couldn’t grab another goal as the game ended 3-2 in Liverpool’s favour.

Everton remain in sixth position in the table for now while Liverpool stay in tenth.
