A Supercopa de España final without Real Madrid or Barcelona has been a rarity, AS points out.

Saudi Arabia is hosting the 42nd edition. The first semi between Athletic and Barcelona finished 5-0. The Madrid derby semi was staged on Thursday, and the previous final between the two giants went Barcelona's way 2-5.

Across the last 20 editions, at least one of the pair has reached the final, winning 16 of those 20, 10 for Barcelona and six for Real Madrid. The remaining titles went to Athletic, Sevilla and Atlético, with Athletic taking two.

The last final without either came in 2004-05, when league winners Valencia met cup holders Zaragoza. That Supercopa was decided over two legs, with the first match played at the cup winners' ground.

In the first leg, Ranieri's Valencia won 0-1 through Vicente. In the return, Víctor Muñoz's Zaragoza turned it around with a 1-3. Álvaro and Galletti made it 0-2 by 34 minutes, Corradi replied on 54, and Javi Moreno settled it seven minutes from time.
