Mexico travel to their own backyard this summer as one of three co-hosts for the FIFA World Cup 2026, carrying the weight of a nation desperate to end a 40-year wait for a quarter-final appearance on home soil.

Javier Aguirre, now in his third stint at the helm of El Tri, led Mexico through a confident pre-tournament spell that included a 1-0 win over Australia and draws against Portugal and Belgium at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

Having guided Mexico to back-to-back CONCACAF titles ahead of the tournament, Aguirre arrives with a settled squad and genuine belief that a deep run is possible.

Mexico suffered a humiliating group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — ending a streak of eight consecutive Round of 16 appearances — and are desperate to use home advantage as fuel for redemption.

Adding to the occasion, legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa becomes only the third player in history alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to appear at six World Cups.

Mexico have been drawn in Group A at the tournament, along with South Africa, South Korea and Czechia.
