The 2026 World Cup curtain-raiser between Mexico and South Africa could be halted by thunderstorms near the venue. According to Superdeporte, organisers are prepared for a temporary suspension if lightning is detected close to the stadium.

Though staged in Mexico, tournament weather procedures follow United States standards, with Canada the third co-host. The rules prioritise the safety of players, supporters and staff.

Under the outdoor protocol, play must stop immediately if lightning is recorded within 13 kilometres. It cannot resume until at least 30 minutes have passed without further strikes inside that radius.

The uncertainty comes hours before a historic edition begins, the first with 48 teams and staged across three nations. Harmonised guidelines now cover security, logistics and weather contingencies.

A delay would be unusual for an opener built around a ceremony and uninterrupted spectacle. Tournament officials maintain that safety is the overriding priority.

Officials will track storm cells until the last moment. Any nearby lightning would trigger a mandated suspension under tournament protocols.
