Mexico face England at the Mexico City Stadium in the early hours of Monday morning in the World Cup last 16, unbeaten in four matches and with a clean sheet in every game of the tournament so far.
Javier Aguirre’s side topped Group A with maximum points before beating Ecuador 2–0 in the last 32, ending a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory. England arrive in Mexico City playing at 2,200 metres above sea level — a challenge Tuchel has described as impossible to fully adapt to in four days.
Aguirre has no injury concerns and selects from a full squad. The central question heading into this match is Gilberto Mora’s starting role. The 17-year-old became the second-youngest player in World Cup history to start a knockout match — just 20 days older than Pelé in 1958 — when he featured against Ecuador.
His performances at this tournament have drawn admiration well beyond Mexico. Aguirre must weigh whether to continue with the teenager or hand Brian Gutiérrez a more experienced option alongside Luis Romo and Érik Lira. The majority expectation is that Mora keeps his place.
Raúl Rangel continues in goal having kept four clean sheets in four matches — the best defensive record at this tournament alongside Spain. The back four of Jorge Sánchez, César Montes, Johan Vásquez and Jesús Gallardo provides the disciplined base that has made Mexico so difficult to break down.
Julián Quiñones leads the attack from the left, having scored the first goal of the 2026 World Cup and contributed to four of Mexico’s eight goals. One more goal or assist would set a new Mexican record for a single World Cup edition. Roberto Alvarado’s three assists have already broken that record. Raúl Jiménez leads the line centrally, one of the most physically imposing strikers in the competition.
Mexico possible starting XI (4-3-3): Rangel; Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Gallardo; Romo, Lira, Mora; Alvarado, Jimenez, Quinones
The match will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
