Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has backed Arsenal to go all the way in the Champions League this season and finally end their long wait for European glory.
While the Gunners are currently sitting seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table with nine games left, Richards believes their tactical profile is more suited to the more expansive style of continental football.
“They’re top of the Premier League, and I think Arsenal are the favourites for the Champions League because I think it will suit them more than the domestic games,” Richards said on The Rest is Football podcast.
“In the Champions League, the games might get a little bit more stretched, whereas in the Premier League everyone is going to that low block against them.”
Arsenal’s dominance this season has been clear for all to see. Following their 2-1 FA Cup victory over Mansfield Town on Saturday, Mikel Arteta’s side became the first Premier League club to reach 100 goals across all competitions this term.
The Gunners are next in action on Wednesday, travelling to Germany to take on Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
Should they progress, Arsenal will face either Bodo/Glimt or Sporting CP in the quarter-finals, after what many consider a favourable knockout draw for Arteta’s men.
Arsenal are the bookmakers’ favourites to lift the Champions League trophy, and many of the club’s supporters believe this season represents their best chance to secure continental silverware.
