Michael Carrick has been appointed Manchester United head coach until the end of the season, the club said in a statement on Tuesday evening.
The 44-year-old replaces Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed after a little over a year in charge.
Carrick called the job an honour and said he knows what it takes to succeed at United, adding that his focus is on helping players meet the club’s standards.
Director of football Jason Wilcox described him as an excellent coach who knows how to win at United and said he is ready to lead a talented and determined squad for the remainder of the campaign as the club builds for sustained success.
Carrick played 464 games for United, retired in 2018, then worked as assistant to José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He was caretaker in 2021, taking two wins and one draw. He later led Middlesbrough from October 2022 to June 2025.
The former England international, capped 34 times, will be assisted by Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson. Wayne Rooney will not be part of the staff, despite being open to it. United are seventh in the Premier League on 32 points and host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday at 13:30 in matchweek 22.
