The two clubs are level on points going into the weekend, albeit the hosts still have a game in hand on their promotion rivals.

A win for either side could take them into the top two in the table, depending on the result of Middlesbrough’s trip to Blackburn Rovers.

The Lions had their four-game winning run ended last weekend with a loss against Michael O’Neill’s side, whereas the Suffolk outfit are unbeaten in their last six in the league.

The Tractor Boys are aiming to return to the top flight at the first attempt after coming 19th in the Premier League last season.

Meanwhile, Millwall have not competed in the Premier League, and their last campaign in the old First Division came in 1990.

David Prutton expects a big game between Millwall and Ipswich this weekend, comparing it to the 2-1 win for Hull City against Wrexham earlier in the month.

He believes that the teams will not be separated after the 90 minutes at Portman Road, and the former Leeds United midfielder has predicted a 2-2 draw between the two promotion-chasers on Saturday.

Ipswich [are] gaining that momentum that they’re going to be having between now and the end of the season,” said Prutton, via Sky Sports.

“I think this is a fascinating battle.

“We’ve had some good ones in recent weeks.

“We had of course Wrexham against Hull City, they were in the top six, and now we’ve got these two.

“So, I think Alex the job that he’s done is slowly but surely getting the credit he deserves and there’s an assumption that Kieran and his Ipswich side that they should be where they are, but that doesn’t make it any easier to achieve.

“2-2.”

Millwall last won at Portman Road in January 2019, but they have played there just once since then, losing 3-1 in November 2023.

The Lions’ last six meetings at Portman Road have seen them lose four, draw one and just that one victory six years ago.

Meanwhile, Ipswich have lost just once at home all season, a 3-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic on 21 October last year.

McKenna’s side have the second best home record in the Championship, with only league leaders Coventry earning more points on their own turf.

Ipswich and Millwall will both go into the weekend with 68 points, but the visitors have played 38 times compared to the hosts’ 37.

The gap to Middlesbrough in second is just two points, so a win at Portman Road could take either club into the automatic promotion spots.

Boro will face Blackburn on 21 March in a 12.30pm kick-off, with the clash in Suffolk also getting underway at the same time.

This will also be the last round of fixtures in the Championship before the March international break.

Millwall and Ipswich need a win to keep pressure on Middlesbrough

A 2-2 draw at Portman Road would only be a win for Middlesbrough, as it would take some pressure off Kim Hellberg’s side, even if they also fail to beat Blackburn.

Every week that passes where Boro can hold onto a top two spot, the chances of them being overtaken diminish.

If they can get a win at Ewood Park, then one of Ipswich or Millwall absolutely must win on Saturday in order to keep up their hopes of automatic promotion.

In that sense, this weekend provides an advantage to the Teesside outfit, and it is set up nicely for a very exciting afternoon at the top of the table.
