Midfielder debuts for Atlético-MG after leaving Corinthians

On the afternoon of last Sunday (18), Atlético-MG drew 0-0 with Tombense at Arena MRV, in the third round of the first phase of the Campeonato Mineiro. The match marked the debut of midfielder Maycon, who left Corinthians after not renewing his contract at the end of the 2025 season. The midfielder played for 67 minutes in yesterday's match until coach Jorge Sampaoli replaced him with Alan Franco.

According to statistics provided by Sofascore, a sports statistics app, Maycon had the following numbers during his time on the field: one key pass, 35/41 accurate passes (85%), 2/3 accurate long balls (67%), 50 ball actions, one foul suffered, three defensive contributions, one interception, three ball recoveries, and 2/2 ground duels won (100%). His rating on the app was 7.0.

Maycon had a renewal lined up with Corinthians at the end of the 2025 season when football executive Fabinho Soldado – now at Internacional – was in the Corinthians football department. Initially, the contract was to be for three years, with Shakhtar Donetsk, from Ukraine, the club where the player had been on loan to the Alvinegro since February 2022, retaining 50% of the economic rights. However, after Marcelo Paz's arrival, the situation changed.

Corinthians reduced its offer to a two-year contract, going against the Ukrainian team's requirement – a three-year contract. With this impasse, Atlético-MG intervened in the negotiations and presented a proposal that met the Ukrainians' demands. The Alvinegro even reconsidered and offered three years, but the player had already decided to move to Belo Horizonte.

Revealed in the youth ranks of Corinthians and champion of the 2015 Copinha with the club, Maycon played 247 matches wearing the Corinthians jersey in two stints (2016-2018 and 2022-2025), scoring 18 goals and providing 16 assists, in addition to winning five titles: Campeonato Paulista (2017, 2018, and 2025), Copa do Brasil (2025), and Brasileirão (2017). The player's second stint at Parque São Jorge was marked by injuries, the most severe being a cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him from April 2024 to February 2025.

In 2025, especially after Dorival Júnior's arrival in late April, Maycon had his longest run on the field during his second stint at Corinthians. In total, he played 43 matches, scoring three goals and providing one assist. He was one of the team's leaders and captain in the Copa do Brasil victory over Vasco at Maracanã.

In his introductory press conference at the Minas Gerais team, Maycon commented on his move from Corinthians to Atlético-MG: “I think we have to be in a place that truly wants you. And they make the necessary efforts. It's not just about the player. As I said, I was already settled with Corinthians. And between me and Atlético, it was also settled very quickly. They had to settle the other part of the negotiation, which was the most difficult from my point of view.”
