Arsenal face an untimely injury setback as Gabriel has emerged as a fresh concern for Mikel Arteta before the Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace. The Brazilian centre back has been central to Arsenal’s impressive defensive form this season, forming a strong partnership with William Saliba. Their solidity has helped the Gunners concede only three goals in 12 matches in all competitions, a record that has underpinned a confident start.
Gabriel featured from the start in Arsenal’s emphatic 4 to 0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. He opened the scoring with a header from Declan Rice’s clever free kick in the second half, before being substituted for summer arrival Cristian Mosquera with under 20 minutes remaining. Arteta confirmed that Gabriel’s withdrawal was due to injury and his involvement against Palace is now uncertain.

Arteta explained, “Obviously, Big Gabi had to leave the pitch with an issue and he hasn’t been able to train yet,” the Arsenal boss said on Friday. “So, let’s see how he evolves in the next 24 hours, whether he is available or not for the weekend.”
The sight of Gabriel stretching his thigh against Atletico has raised concern among supporters who recognise his importance to the Arsenal structure. Arteta must now weigh up whether to risk him or reshuffle his back line.
Arsenal are also coping without captain Martin Odegaard, who damaged the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in the recent win against West Ham. The midfielder is not expected to return until after the November international break, having only just recovered from a recurring shoulder problem.
Further fitness issues include Noni Madueke and Kai Havertz who are still unavailable with knee injuries, along with long term absentee Gabriel Jesus. There was some encouragement from Arteta who stated, “They are all progressing really well,” he said. “They have all started to do certain activities. They are all super willing to be available as quick as possible, but at the moment none of them are yet in contention in the next week or so.”
With a demanding schedule on the horizon, Arsenal need solutions to manage their injury list. Arteta will be keen to protect his remaining senior players while maintaining momentum. Palace’s visit to the Emirates presents a key moment for the squad to show resilience, especially if Gabriel is not cleared to feature.
