Gunners will go six points clear of rivals Manchester City if they beat Fulham this weekend

Mikel Arteta is backing Arsenal's siege mentality to get them over the line domestically and in Europe during the final weeks of the season.

The Gunners are six matches away from potentially winning both the Premier League and Champions League and making this the greatest campaign in the club's history.

Victory over Fulham on Saturday evening would take Arsenal six points clear of title rivals Manchester City at the top of the table before the focus then shifts back to the Champions League.

Arsenal are locked at 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in their semi-final tie ahead of the second leg in north London on Tuesday night.

There was a sense of injustice in the Arsenal camp at a penalty award for Eberechi Eze being overturned in the first leg, leaving Arteta "fuming".

Asked if that incident had fostered a siege mentality in his squad, Arteta said: “We certainly have that.

“We need to face any context, any situation, to achieve our goal. What happened was extremely disappointing and we need to make it at home now.”

It is a quick turnaround for Arsenal, who take on Fulham not even 72 hours after they were in action in Madrid.

The Gunners were beaten by Bournemouth in between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Sporting last month.

That match was a Saturday lunchtime kick-off and Arteta is hoping the more favourable evening slot will help his side this weekend.

“Yes, the time of the game is going to be different to start with,” Arteta said.

“And hopefully the game and the result will be very different. The game especially when it turned and how efficient they were with certain actions.

“We know the difficulty of the opponent, and of the schedule but I sense it in the team. We want it that much that tomorrow we're going to be fresh again and ready to go."

On the suggestion that the Premier League could do more with the scheduling to help their clubs in European competitions, Arteta added: “Ideally, yes. We all know that. If they can do that, that would be great.”
