Mikel Vesga has ended his decade at Athletic, cancelling his final year and joining Almería on a three-year deal. The 33-year-old leaves with 275 appearances and two trophies, the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa.
The midfielder said in a video released by the club that it had been a beautiful journey and that, though it pains him, parting now is best for everyone. He thanked supporters and vowed to keep backing Athletic from San Mamés.
His exit had been anticipated. His involvement had waned in recent seasons and, this pre-season, he and Julen Agirrezabala were the only available players unused in Terzic’s friendlies, with the goalkeeper also among those who could depart.
Vesga joins an Almería led by Xavi García Pimienta and aiming for a return to Primera. He will link up with fellow former Athletic forward Jon Morcillo.
Mallorca initially looked ahead in the chase, but Almería ultimately convinced player and club. Athletic disclosed no figures, and Vesga is set to recoup over the next three seasons the two million gross he forgoes by leaving now.
