Mikey Johnston is an Irish international winger who plays for West Bromwich Albion, having joined the club on a permanent four-year contract in August 2024 after an impressive initial loan spell from Celtic earlier that year.

Johnston, born in Glasgow in 1999, came through the Celtic academy and made his senior debut there, spending the bulk of his early career with the Scottish giants before a loan to Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal and then to West Brom.

Just over two years into his West Brom career, he has registered 95 appearances. The 26-year-old has also been moved all around the team, having operated on both flanks, as an attacking midfielder, and as an emergency wing-back or full-back.

Johnston is a player with excellent ball-striking from range and he can be dependable from set-pieces as well. In fact, at the current stage of the 2025/26 season, his nine assists have him top of the assist charts ahead of Gus Hamer, Ryan Giles, and Marcelino Nunez.

However, he has failed to register a single goal involvement in his last nine, with Johnston on the bench in recent 0-0 draws to Stoke City and Birmingham City. It's perhaps possible that he could be in line for a summer exit, should that continue.

His strong performances while on his initial loan, including seven goals in his first 18 Championship appearances, convinced the Baggies to secure his services permanently. Since then, he has not scored anywhere near as frequently for the club in the subsequent 18 months.

In the right team, he is a player capable of both goals and assists in English football's second tier. It's why clubs like Sheffield United were touted with making a move for Johnston late in the January transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international remained but it has also been revealed by Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox that Johnston had firm interest from Turkish giants Trabzonspor in the final hours of the window as well.

Johnston will have two years remaining on his contract this June, with West Brom having a decision to make regarding his future this summer. Irrespective of relegation, Johnston is likely to have suitors once more.

A players salary can dictate whether a buying club are willing to sign them, however. Using estimates from Capology, we can determine how likely it is for him to leave permanently, especially if WBA remain in the Championship.

Interestingly, their prediction is that Johnston is earning around £12,500 per week, with 13 West Brom players paid in excess of that amount. That sort of wage is below average in their squad and for most Championship sides on the whole.

Based on those figures, it's likely that Johnston would be able to leave the club easily in the summer. With that in mind, the Baggies might want to tie him down to a new deal on improved wages.

He has not set the world alight at the Hawthorns, especially in terms of utilising his ability from range. However, Johnston is a peak-age player who averages a solid number of goal involvements for West Brom.

His future is likely to be determined by which league his team resides in next term, as well as if Eric Ramsay is keen to utilise him. That's if the current West Brom boss sees out the 2025/26 season.
