Rafael Leao pretty much announced his summer departure from Milan while the team was in the midst of appointing a new coach and putting together their management. The offers for him have been lacking so far, and he started changing his tune. He talked to DAZN following the clash with Uzbekistan in the World Cup (via Eurosport).

“Ruben Amorim is an excellent coach. Things didn’t go the way he wanted at Manchester United, but he remains great. I will finalize my decision only after the competition ends. This season has been very difficult for me, considering the injury and many other things during the course of it.”

According to Corriere dello Sport, the new Milan gaffer will evaluate the whole entire roster, Leao included, before starting to direct the transfer-market moves. He’ll be highly influential given their light front-office structure.

Among the early targets, Amorim has singled out Francisco Trincao as a potential replacement for his compatriot and as an alternative to Christian Pulisic and Christopher Nkunku. On the other hand, his price tag is about €40M, and he’s under contract until 2030. It won’t be an easy negotiation. In the midfield, Morten Hjulmand could be let go for a fee inferior to his release clause, but he won’t come cheap either.

Our Take on Milan and Leao

The club will have a big say as well, if they don’t rip the band-aid off, he’d have to extend his contract, or they’ll lose leverage next summer. Rather than being dictated by the parties’ wills, the outcome might be determined by the market. Despite his patented inconsistency, a farewell can only materialize if a worthy offer and a respectable landing spot emerge.
