For the past several months, Inter and AC Milan have been trying to buy the land of the San Siro.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri are planning to build a new stadium adjacent to the existing structure.

Initially, the clubs had wanted to demolish the San Siro and build in its place. However, bureaucratic hurdles made tearing down the new stadium impossible.

Then, the clubs had pursued plans to build separate stadiums in the greater Milan metropolitan area.

Now, Inter and Milan are working on plans that would see them stay in the same area, but keep at least part of the iconic existing stadium.

However, the clubs must complete the purchase of the land soon.

Time is running out for Inter and Milan to avoid an injunction against demolishing the iconic second tier of the San Siro coming into force.

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala called the San Siro situation “an almost personal cross for me.”

“I didn’t take it upon myself as an issue,” he said. “But I haven’t looked the other way either.”

Sala stated that “it’s divisive, and it risks dominating the electoral campaign.”

“Even though the city has far more important problems,” he said.

“If a solution isn’t found, then the next Mayor will inherit a very tricky situation.”

The Milan Mayor commented that “I’ll have my say, but the City Council will ultimately decide.”

“I hope to be able to manage all the problems involved,” he added. “And to get to the Olympics having done the right things.”
