Miles Leaburn scored his first Championship goal in Charlton Athletic's 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town
Charlton Athletic recently enjoyed a brilliant 3-0 victory away at promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town, which has propelled the Addicks into the top-six against all odds.
Nathan Jones’ side were promoted from League One via the play-offs last term and spent much less than other newcomers, Birmingham City and Wrexham during the summer window.
However, the Addicks have made the most impressive start to the season out of the three of them, picking up points in eight of the first 11 matches to sit fifth in the Championship standings, whilst Birmingham and Wrexham are both yet to crack the top 10.
Charlton have won four of their last six league matches, with the most recent of those providing by far their most impressive display of the campaign thus far.
Jones’ side soaked up immense pressure from Ipswich during the first half, as the Tractor Boys’ overwhelming attacking talent failed to find a way though the Addicks’ backline.
In the second half, Charlton decided to go for the kill and struck three times without reply to take their most impressive victory yet against a side tipped for an instant Premier League return by many
In what was a night full of highs for the Addicks, a specific point of celebration was young forward Miles Leaburn netting his first goal of the season.
The 21-year-old came through Charlton’s youth ranks and has typically been deployed as an impact option off the bench by Jones this season, with the likes of Charlie Kelman and Isaac 'Tanto' Olaofe brought in during the summer.
Leaburn has already scored over 30 goals in 102 appearances for the Valley outfit amid a number of injury setbacks, representing an incredibly impressive feat achieved at such a young age.
When reflecting on the match with Charlton’s club media, the forward struggled to find the correct words to describe how he was feeling after scoring against Ipswich.
“I'm a bit speechless,” exclaimed Leaburn. “We were obviously coming in trying to win, but to win by this margin and how we did it, it was just incredible.
“It's always amazing, obviously I haven't scored in a minute, but I told myself I'd never knee slide again, but just the vibes and the scenes, man, I had to.
“They (the fans) were amazing all game, obviously the first half was tough, but we got through it and we showed what we can do in that second half.
“I've been waiting to get that goal, I've been wanting it so badly.”
Heading into the 2025/26 campaign, not many people predicted that Charlton Athletic would be one of the sides in the play-off hunt, but that is exactly where the Addicks find themselves at this moment in time.
Jones has previously shown with Luton Town that he knows how to galvanise a club coming up from League One and quickly turn some into a competitive second-tier outfit that is capable of fighting for the top six.
Charlton currently find themselves sat in fifth, two points behind Millwall in third and have an enticing run of fixtures ahead of them.
In their next five matches, the Addicks face Swansea City, Wrexham and Southampton, who are all currently in the bottom half of the division.
If Jones and Co. can capitalise on this and put a run of victories together, they could soon build a small buffer to teams outside of the top six, which would put Charlton in a really strong position to fight for the play-offs.
There is still plenty of football left to play this term, but the Addicks find themselves in a really promising position at this point in the season.
