A minute’s silence will be held before Portugal’s Euro 2025 opener against Spain on Thursday night, following the shocking deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre.
The Portuguese Football Federation had requested for a minute’s silence to be held before their Euro 2025 opener, which kicks off at 8pm.
The tribute to Jota and his brother will be observed at all of Thursday’s and Friday’s games at the tournament.
Portugal and Liverpool star Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 following a car crash in northern Spain.
The crash also claimed the life of his brother, Andre, 26, – also a professional footballer for F.C. Penafiel – who was also in the car at the time of the accident.
It occurred at kilometre 65 of the A-52 near the Zamora region of Sanabria early on Thursday morning.
The Zamora Provincial Council posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Two young people have died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria).
“The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the Zamora Province Consortium) responded. The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”
He had just married long-time partner Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children.
Jota scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for Portugal. He was part of the Liverpool squad that won the men’s Premier League during the 2024-25 season.
The Portuguese Football Federation requested UEFA for a minute’s silence to be held ahead of the country’s Women’s Euro 2025 opener against Spain tonight.
Portugal will play tournament favourites Spain at 8pm (BST) at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern.
It has since been confirmed that a minute’s silence will be observed at all Euro 2025 games held on Thursday and Friday.
In a prior statement, they wrote: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all Portuguese Football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, this morning, in Spain.
“Much more than the fantastic player, with almost 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community.
“The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, the players played.
“The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute of silence, this Thursday, before the match of our National Team with Spain, in the Women’s European Championship. We lost two champions.
“The disappearance of Diogo and Andre Silva represent irreparable losses for Portuguese Football and we will do everything to honor their legacy on a daily basis.”
The shocking death of Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota comes two weeks after he married his long-time partner Rute.
Together, the pair have three children. They had a son, Dinis, in 2021, and daughters born in 2023 and 2024, whose names have not been revealed in public.”
Just a day before his passing, Jota posted a video of his wedding on social media platform Instagram.
Alongside the video he wrote: “A day we will never forget.”
