MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley, who oversees the management of Toronto FC, believes the team is headed in the right direction.
Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment oversees seven professional teams, which means President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Pelley has a lot of responsibility and a host of teams he has to speak on behalf of.
That includes the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, which is undoubtedly the ownership group's prized possession and most criticized team. With the Maple Leafs recently letting go of their president, Brendan Shanahan, Keith Pelley revealed in a recent press conference discussing the decision that he will now be more involved with the hockey team.
The question that many Toronto FC supporters will now be asking is what does that mean for his involvement with Toronto FC?
Pelley's arrival in 2024 saw Bill Manning relieved of his duties as president of Toronto FC. Pelley then appointed Jason Hernandez as general manager, having him report directly to Pelley.
In the media conference for Shanahan's departure, Keith Pelley was asked if he had learned any lessons about removing Manning as a president, and subsequently not finding a replacement to help oversee Jason Hernandez as general manager. Pelley felt he couldn't draw comparisons to becoming more hands-on with the Maple Leafs and that not having a president at Toronto FC had any effect on results.
"I don't think there's any parallel really between that. When we [let Manning go], we were changing the team ethos, we changed the way we were going to operate the academy, the way were going to operate the structure of that team. I am totally confident that TFC is headed in the right direction. "MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley
Streamlining the decision-making process between Hernandez and Pelley clearly doesn't look like an issue from Pelley's perspective but Toronto FC's results on the pitch hardly support that.
Sure, too many cooks in the kitchen can be a real thing. However, for Toronto FC, it feels like there might not be enough cooks in the kitchen. If MLSE continues to downsize some of the presidential roles that exist with their professional teams, it just means Keith Pelley will have less time to be involved with every team while simultaneously being involved with multiple teams.
Pelley then made a pretty bold statement that sounds a bit laughable based on where the Reds are situated right now.
""6-1 win against Montreal last week..the most goals they've ever scored.... is the start of it. TFC's is going to contend for championships every year. I have the utmost confidence in Jason Hernandez. This is just his second year and giving him the reign of that, I'm confident in TFC. "MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley
Toronto FC hosts Nashville SC on Saturday, May 24 at BMO Field. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET, being streamed on both Apple TV and TSN.
