Mohamed Salah is close to joining Trabzonspor, with the 34-year-old free after leaving Liverpool. He looks set to continue his career in Türkiye.
The club said in a statement on Tuesday night that talks have begun to sign the Egypt winger, and that he will be at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport on Wednesday at 12:00 before travelling the 1000 kilometres to Trabzon later in the day.
Salah spent nine years at Liverpool, scoring 257 goals, and departed at the end of his contract on 30 June. He was part of the Egypt side knocked out of the World Cup in the last 16 by Argentina, 3-2.
Trabzonspor finished third in last season’s Süper Lig. They will contest the Europa League play-offs in late August against either Ferencvaros or Gornik Zabrze.
If he signs on the Black Sea coast, Salah would play in a fifth league after Egypt with Al-Mokawloon, Switzerland with Basel, England with Chelsea and Liverpool, and Italy with Fiorentina then Roma. Notable team-mates at Trabzonspor include Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana, French midfielder Batista Mendy, Montenegrin defender Stefan Savic and Ukrainian playmaker Ruslan Malinovskyi.
