Liverpool, Salah and Didi Hamann, Uncomfortable Questions Around an Anfield Giant

Hamann’s Stark Salah Verdict

Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool story has long felt too vast to fit neatly into ordinary football language. Goals, medals, records and moments of pure inevitability have made him one of Anfield’s defining modern figures. Yet even legends eventually reach the point where admiration meets assessment, and Didi Hamann has offered a particularly blunt view of what may come next.

Quotes from GOAL, the former Liverpool midfielder questioned whether Salah would still attract serious Premier League interest this summer.

“I’m not sure in the Premier League whether there are any takers,” Hamann said. “I think it’s no secret that he’s past his best. If you look at the last 18 months, he’s only scored a handful of goals from open play since the Christmas before last. So I’d be surprised if there are any takers in the Premier League. I think Saudi, MLS, or maybe Italy are the most likely destinations.”

For Salah, that is the sharp edge of football’s memory. It remembers everything, then still asks what comes next.

Saudi, MLS or Italy Tipped as Next Step

Hamann’s argument centres not on Salah’s reputation, but on the market around him. At 33, with vast wages and a game built on explosive attacking output, the Egyptian’s next move is unlikely to be simple.

The former Germany international does not see Spain or Germany as realistic landing spots, while Italy, where Salah previously played for Fiorentina and Roma, may offer a different kind of opportunity.

“He’s been in Italy. In Italy, you know, they like an older and experienced player, so I can see him ending up there. I can’t see him at any of the top clubs in Spain. I can’t really see him in Germany because they won’t be able to pay the wages.”

That leaves Saudi Arabia, MLS or Serie A as the most obvious routes, according to Hamann, each offering a different version of life after Liverpool.

Proving Worth at Liverpool

Salah’s own frustration has also become part of the wider conversation. After years of elite production, he has recently spoken about the demand to keep proving himself. Hamann, though, believes that burden never disappears at the highest level.

“A player like him always wants to prove that he’s the best. That’s why I was surprised at some of his comments where he said, ‘Oh, I’ve done so much for the club; why should I prove my worth every single day?’ No, you have to because it’s not what he’s done in the past; it’s what he’ll do now and in the future,” Hamann added.

It is a demanding view, but football rarely softens its standards for sentiment.

Anfield Legacy Remains Immense

Salah is expected to leave Liverpool this summer after nine remarkable years. Since arriving from Roma, he has scored 257 goals in 435 appearances, helping deliver the Champions League in 2019 and two Premier League titles.

This season’s return of 12 goals in 39 appearances has invited scrutiny, especially during a difficult Liverpool campaign. Yet whatever happens next, Salah leaves as more than a great forward. He leaves as a player who reshaped what modern Liverpool could be.

Hamann may be right that the next chapter leads away from England. What cannot be doubted is that Salah’s Anfield chapter already belongs among the club’s greatest.
