Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has been named as Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for 2024/25.

Salah has been named winner of the prestigious accolade for a record-equalling third time, matching the achievement of Arsenal icon Thierry Henry. The Egyptian previously claimed the prize in 2017/18 and 2021/22.

Salah was recognised after a stunning role in Liverpool’s title success. The 32-year-old is the Premier League’s leading scorer with 28 goals and also leads the league for assists, with 18. His 46 goal contributions are a Premier League record for a 38-game campaign.

With three games of the season to go, Salah needs three more assists to break the Premier League’s single season record.

Two more goal contributions will also see him eclipse Andy Cole and Alan Shearer for the most goal contributions in a single campaign. The 47 record held by that duo was achieved in 42-game seasons.

Salah won 90% of the FWA vote, a record margin this century. He finished ahead of Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk, with Newcastle forward Alexander Isak and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice rounding out the top four.

FWA chairman John Cross saluted Salah’s remarkable season: “Rarely has there been a more popular winner than Mo. His overwhelming victory is just a reflection of an incredible season.

“He continues to rewrite the record books and his performances this season have obviously been key to Liverpool’s 20th title.

“It’s been a privilege watching him this season and it will be a privilege to welcome him to our dinner to celebrate his success.”

Arsenal’s Alessia Russo has claimed the Women’s Footballer of the Year award.
