World Cup co-hosts Canada face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday at 21:00, leaning on four Ligue 1-linked mainstays as they chase a first-ever place in the knockout phase.

According to L'Équipe, Jesse Marsch has tracked Ligue 1 closely since taking charge in 2024, when four Canucks were still in France. Since then Jonathan David has moved from Lille to Juventus and Ismaël Koné has joined Sassuolo, while Derek Cornelius remains on Marseille’s books and Moïse Bombito is at Nice. Bombito was highly doubtful on the eve of the opener, though Marsch relies on this group when fully fit.

Bombito is a late bloomer who switched reluctantly from striker to defence after spells in junior colleges, only breaking through after 22. A tibia fracture meant he barely featured for Nice, yet the 26-year-old was named in Marsch’s 26-man squad. Fresh pain in camp raised the prospect of a last-minute withdrawal.

Cornelius left for Europe at 17, endured tough stints in Germany’s lower leagues and in Serbia, then reset at Vancouver Whitecaps. Recruited by Roberto De Zerbi for Marseille to suit a short-passing build-up, it never quite showed and a loan to Rangers was hindered by injuries. The 28-year-old remains valued for his physicality and European experience.

Koné’s time at Marseille was defined by a filmed confrontation with De Zerbi in the club’s 2024-25 retrospective, and he left in January 2025. A loan to Rennes steadied him, then he kicked on at Sassuolo, starting regularly and scoring six, prompting the option to be triggered. At 23 he is already a key figure for Canada and wants to confirm that status with the national side.

David, born in the United States and raised in Haiti then Canada, exploded at Lille with goals, silverware and the Champions League. He joined Juventus on a free last summer and had a mixed season as the club missed next year’s competition. For Canada he is the primary threat, record scorer with 39 and top 10 for caps with 77, and he has captained in Alphonso Davies’ absence.
