Monaco have decided against triggering the option to sign Simon Adingra permanently following his loan, according to Nice-Matin. The clause was put at between €5m and €10m, roughly £4.3m to £8.5m.

Earlier reports around the deal suggested the figure was closer to £17m.

Adingra joined from Sunderland in January and made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and supplying two assists.

The 24-year-old was largely used as a wing-back, offering bursts of attacking threat but with inconsistent performances and defensive questions.

Monaco’s stance means he is due back at Sunderland this summer, with Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris to decide his next step.

He remains part of the Ivory Coast set-up, having been named in their World Cup squad and featuring in the 74th minute of a 2-1 loss to Germany, though he missed last season’s AFCON.

Sunderland will now weigh whether to reintegrate him, move him on again or keep him within the wider Premier League group as squad planning continues.
