Jonas Urbig is expected to be groomed as Manuel Neuer’s long-term successor. However, according to the Bayern captain, there is no agreement regarding more playing time for him in the upcoming season.

Will Jonas Urbig get more playing time with FC Bayern next season? Following the 21-year-old’s numerous competitive matches last season, Manuel Neuer commented on a possible division of roles during training camp at Tegernsee—and tempered expectations.

When asked whether there was an agreement that Urbig would play even more games in the future than he did last season, the Bayern captain made it clear that he does not currently expect any major changes.

“No, I think it will be similar to last season. We’ll support each other; we have a strong goalkeeping squad, including Ulle and the young goalkeepers. What’s important is that we help each other, that we push each other, and that we can always give our best for the team in the goalkeeper position. And that’s how it will go this season as well,” Neuer explained.

Urbig benefited from Neuer’s absences

Urbig joined FC Bayern in the winter and made a total of 21 competitive appearances last season. Of those, he played 15 matches in the Bundesliga, three in the DFB Cup, and three in the Champions League. In total, the U21 national team goalkeeper spent 1,650 minutes on the field for the German record champions.

However, the fact that Urbig saw so much playing time was also due to Neuer’s injury-related absences. The 40-year-old missed several weeks, clearing the way for his young rival, who capitalized on this opportunity with numerous appearances.

Neuer has stated that this is likely to be his final season, and Urbig is being groomed to be his successor.

However, based on statements from the Bayern captain, there are currently strong indications that the division of duties will hardly change in the new season. According to Neuer’s assessment, there are currently no plans to significantly increase Urbig’s playing time.
