Morecambe’s time in the Football League came to an end after 18 years, as a 3-1 loss to Salford at the Mazuma Stadium confirmed their relegation from League Two.
Salford got off to a strong start, taking the lead early when Ben Woodburn’s free-kick caused chaos in the box. The ball was only half-cleared and fell nicely for Ossama Ashley, who fired it in.
It got worse for the hosts just before the break, as former fan favourite Cole Stockton made it 2-0, calmly finishing after being played through by Woodburn.
Morecambe managed to pull one back in the second half through Yann Songo´o, who smashed home after a long throw from Max Taylor. But hopes of a comeback were short-lived, with Kelly N’Mai tapping in a third for Salford late on to put the game — and Morecambe’s season — to bed.
Meanwhile, Carlisle gave themselves a lifeline at the bottom thanks to a last-gasp screamer from Callum Whelan in stoppage time, earning a 1-1 draw away at Accrington.
It all comes down to next weekend: Mark Hughes’ side need to beat Cheltenham and hope Tranmere don’t pick up three points against Crewe at Prenton Park to have any chance of staying up.
