Morgan Rogers is due to have a Chelsea medical on Monday before a £117m British-record move from Aston Villa.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, he returned to the UK on Sunday and will now finalise the switch after the clubs struck a deal over the weekend. Arsenal had long been viewed as his likeliest destination, but Chelsea moved in with an agreement approved by Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris.
Villa wanted to keep the 23-year-old, yet a fully guaranteed offer proved impossible to refuse. The sale eases immediate pressure from Uefa financial restrictions.
Middlesbrough will receive 20 per cent of the profit, expected to be about £20m, having sold Rogers to Villa for an initial £8m in January 2024.
Switzerland international Johan Manzambi has already joined as his replacement for a club-record £52m, and Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is on the brink of a £38m move. The fee will also help fund a winger search, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye among the options.
Further exits are likely, with Hull City considering Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne expected to seal a return to PSG this week. Rogers leaves after 125 appearances, his last in May’s Europa League final win over Freiburg where he scored his 31st goal. He is the second Villa player to depart for a British-record fee after Jack Grealish, and the price tops the £116m City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this month.
