Morten Hjulmand: Juventus back in race for Man United target

Manchester United’s midfield has stabilised somewhat after a tumultuous start to the season.
Ruben Amorim’s perseverance with a pairing of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes initially raised eyebrows, especially with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo left warming the bench.
But the Red Devils have taken ten points from the last 12 available in the Premier League using that combination, meaning the notoriously stubborn head coach is unlikely to be making any major changes any time soon.
That said, United should certainly not be relying on 33-year-old Casemiro to run the middle of the park in the long term, especially given that his contract expires in the summer.
Ever since Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP a year ago United have been linked to players from his former club, and their interest in midfield dynamo Morten Hjulmand seems to be serious.
He is frequently named as one of the club’s top targets for the position, alongside the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
United are not the only club eyeing Hjulmand to boost their engine room, with Manchester City reportedly willing to go head-to-head with their crosstown rivals to bring the Dane to England.
Juventus have also long admired the player and according to Calciomercato the Serie A giants may look to sign him in January, frustrating United in the process.
The Italian outlet notes that Hjulmand, who lines up for Sporting tonight in a Champions League clash against Juventus, remains “among the names of possible targets when the transfer market reopens.” He “will be closely watched” after a move was mooted last summer.
Juventus have not yet filled their midfield vacancy and Calciomercato claim, in no uncertain terms, “in January they will try to sign a midfielder”.
The report claims that United had a €40m bid for the player turned down in the summer and that Amorim is very keen to work with him again.
The outlet points to his €60m release clause and notes Sporting’s reluctance to part ways with the player, despite his attempts to force a move, and adds that Juventus will “continue to monitor any developments regarding Hjulmand’s future”.
Other names under Juventus consideration are Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic of Al Hilal – Amorim will be hoping the Italian side look to either of these instead and leave him clear to reunite with his former charge.
