Manchester City may have a significant impact on Manchester United’s midfield overhaul this summer.
The two clubs are the main contenders for Elliot Anderson. Nottingham Forest are hoping to spark a bidding war for their dynamic midfielder, who is valued at approximately £100 million.
However, at present, it is City who are widely believed to be in pole position to sign Anderson. Interestingly, their focus on Anderson has opened the door for United to pursue another midfield metronome.
According to Football Insider, Manchester United have identified Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand as a “clear candidate” to strengthen their midfield ahead of next season.
City are also interested in the Denmark international, but it is claimed that United are now leading the race to land him.
It is believed that Hjulmand is not a top priority for City, who are focused on signing Anderson.
Furthermore, Hjulmand is reportedly pushing for a move to the Premier League this summer, as he is ready to leave Portugal after three seasons with Sporting. He has been described as having “monster mentality”.
Earlier this year, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming that Sporting president Frederico Varandas has a verbal agreement with Hjulmand, who will be allowed to leave should a team offer €50m.
Hjulmand is not the only Sporting star on United’s radar.
On Tuesday, Portuguese newspaper Record claimed the Red Devils are monitoring central defender Ousmane Diomande.
The 6’3″ Ivorian is regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting defensive prospects, owing to his imposing presence and technical ability.
Both Diomande and Hjulmand are enjoying promising seasons, helping Sporting go far in the Champions League. They face Arsenal in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.
