Mosquera’s Versatility on Full Display in Arsenal v Villarreal Friendly

Arsenal continued their pre-season preparations with a 3-2 defeat against Villarreal on Wednesday, 7th August, in front of a lively Emirates Stadium crowd. Despite goals from Christian Nørgaard and Martin Ødegaard, the Gunners could not seal a victory. Viktor Gyökeres was handed an anticipated start, but it was two substitutes who truly caught the eye: Max Dowman and summer signing Cristhian Mosquera.

While Dowman drew attention for winning the penalty that led to Arsenal’s second goal, it was Mosquera’s versatility that stood out most. Deployed at right-back at the start of the second half, the 21-year-old showed impressive composure and adaptability, overlapping Bukayo Saka on multiple occasions and delivering a solid defensive display.

Right-Back Surprise Shows Mosquera’s Range

When links to Mosquera first emerged in June, his positional flexibility was not considered a major strength. Known primarily as a centre-half during his time at Valencia, he had occasionally featured in both central positions but rarely as a full-back. That made his deployment on the right flank against Villarreal something of a surprise.

To his credit, Mosquera adapted with confidence, later shifting into a more familiar centre-back role when Jurrien Timber entered the game in the 62nd minute. His ability to perform well in both roles provides Mikel Arteta with additional tactical options heading into a long and demanding season.

A Valuable Squad Option for Arteta

Ben White and Jurrien Timber are expected to compete for the starting right-back role, but with injuries a constant concern – both missed significant time last season – Mosquera’s emergence could prove timely. His performance suggests he is more than just a backup centre-half.

With the season opener fast approaching, Mosquera’s showing against Villarreal will give Arteta another reason to trust his squad depth. The Spaniard looked assured, energetic, and positionally aware, making him a player to watch in the weeks ahead.
