Jose Mourinho has given his backing to Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and insists his compatriot has ‘incredible potential’.
Amorim endured a tough start to his reign at Manchester United after replacing Erik ten Hag in November. The Red Devils ended the Premier League campaign 15th in the table, the club’s lowest league finish since 1974.
The 40-year-old will head into the new season under pressure to show improvement. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have been added to a squad that struggled to score goals in the Premier League last season.
Former Manchester United manager Mourinho has backed Amorim to succeed. He believes a better footballing structure at the club can help Amorim realise his ‘incredible potential’ at Old Trafford.
“Today, I think that with the change of ownership, which doesn’t have a lot of football experience but knows sports, it brings more sensitivity [compared to my own experience when I was at the club],” Mourinho said.
“What happened to Ruben [Amorim] is that he’s been the coach of the worst Manchester in Premier League history and still has the confidence [of the board] to continue, which is already a sign that a lot of things are changing within the club.
“We all agree that he’s a coach with great potential and a strong personality. I think he has incredible potential to do good work.”
