Iñaki Williams reached 500 Athletic appearances on a chastening night in Girona, the captain urging unity and a response to lift themselves and keep the European push alive.

According to El Correo, the club had no formal tribute planned, with director of football Mikel González noting the milestone before kick-off and saying they wanted him to reach many more. The match came after a full week of preparation following their Copa exit.

Valverde started Williams through the middle instead of Guruzeta, with Robert Navarro on the flank. He pressed high before the break but accepted Girona outplayed them and that Athletic never settled. Around the 15th minute Sancet sent him through, yet he could not get past Blind.

Near the half-hour he produced a weak header that did not trouble the hosts. After the interval Guruzeta replaced a quiet Robert Navarro, pushing Williams back to the wing, but he still struggled to impose himself.

He shot wide after Gazzaniga saved with his foot from Guruzeta and the rebound fell his way. Williams was replaced by Izeta in the 73rd minute, cutting a frustrated figure on the bench. Post-match, the squad thanked travelling fans, who mixed disapproval with support.

Williams reflected that doubts had crept in too often this season, said many phases felt uncomfortable and that it was difficult, while stressing they would try to keep fighting for Europe.
