Julian Nagelsmann condemned the VAR decision to rule out Jonathan Tah’s extra time goal against Paraguay, after Germany were eliminated on penalties in Monday’s World Cup round of 32.

Germany thought they had gone 2-1 up in extra time when Tah headed in. Referee Jalal Jayed initially awarded the goal, then was sent to the monitor by the video assistant referee.

Following a review of more than three minutes, he disallowed it, judging Waldemar Anton to have fouled goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

“It’s a scandal that he overturned that decision,” Nagelsmann said. “It’s not just a scandal, it’s a complete scandal. I have no idea what he saw there, it’s really a joke. That is not even remotely a foul.” He was speaking to ZDF.

“For me, that wasn’t a foul,” said the centre-back. “But in the end, we have to accept the referee’s decision. There’s no point in arguing about it. We have to look at ourselves and take responsibility for the decisions we made.”
