Radja Nainggolan has emphasized this on several occasions. If it had been up to him, he would have gladly stayed at Roma.

His transfer to Inter was made possible by the club’s will and, above all, by the sporting director at the time, the Spaniard Ramon Monchi, currently under contract with Aston Villa.

The former Roma midfielder, speaking on Radio Romanista, didn’t mince his words when describing the former sporting director of the Trigoria club: “I had a good relationship with him; he even asked me for advice on who we should buy.”

“Then, while I was on vacation, an agent called me from Turkey to tell me about the offers that had arrived from Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas. I didn’t understand what was happening, and my agent didn’t know anything either. When I called this intermediary back, he told me that Roma’s sporting director had instructed him to sell me to Turkey.”

“At that point, everything was clear. I called Monchi and told him that if he wanted me to leave, I would choose the team myself. And I went to Inter, where Spalletti was.”

Nainggolan continued: “If I had known Monchi would leave after six months, I would have stayed. But I couldn’t have foreseen this. I’m just like that; I can’t live my daily life alongside someone I don’t respect and who lied to me.”

“Furthermore, I wasn’t the only one who had problems with him. The team was built by Sabatini, one of the greatest football experts I’ve ever met. Monchi wanted to sell everyone, especially Dzeko, who was one of the best players. Edin wanted to sell him in every transfer window. It’s unconventional for an executive to want to sell such important players.”
