Napoli are “set to resume talks” with Manchester United over signing Alejandro Garnacho as the January transfer window enters its final week, a report from Sky Sports has revealed.
The Serie A leaders identified the Argentinian winger as their “number one target” to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in a €70 million move.
The financial situation at Old Trafford, driven by acute concerns over profits and sustainability rules (PSR), means United would be reluctantly open to Garnacho’s departure, should a suitable offer arrive.
Reports suggest the club value their 20-year-old winger in a similar vein to Kvaratskhelia – the €70 million mark. However, other reports contended United would be willing to compromise on this price given the Red Devils’ need to invest in new signings themselves this month.
Napoli saw an official offer worth €50 million (including add-ons) rejected by Old Trafford officials, indicating the club were willing to hold firm over their valuation.
In response, Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna publicly revealed the Italian club “certainly will not pay prices that are outside the market value.”
At a similar time, Napoli also entered talks with Borussia Dortmund to sign Karim Adeyemi with reports suggesting a deal was close between the two clubs for a package worth around €40 million on the table.
However, Sky Sports now report the Serie A side want to re-enter negotiations with United for Garnacho, revealing a renewed desire to close a deal for the Argentine winger.
Tweet: “BREAKING: Napoli set to resume talks with Manchester United over Alejandro Garnacho in the next few hours, according to Sky in Italy. United would be reluctant sellers but are not in the position to turn down a sizeable offer; Chelsea have not yet shown official interest.”
The report also touches upon Premier League rivals Chelsea being in the hunt for Garnacho, though the London club have “not yet shown official interest.”
This means Napoli remain at the front of the queue for the 20-year-old winger with Sky Sports reiterating United remain “reluctant sellers” who would “not [be] in the position to turn down a sizeable offer” should it arrive.
However, Old Trafford officials appear intent on sticking to their valuation of Garnacho with Napoli executives’ words suggesting there is a considerable gap between their number and United’s.
This remains a transfer saga likely to go down until the final moments of the transfer window, with a late approach by Chelsea impossible to rule out.
