On Saturday 25 October, one of the most anticipated clashes of Serie A Matchday 8 takes place at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium: Napoli vs Inter. Cristian Chivu’s Nerazzurri will kick off at 18:00 CET.
Inter go into the match in excellent form, riding a strong run of victories that reflects both solidity and consistency. The Nerazzurri currently sit second in the league table on 15 points, level with both Napoli and Roma.
Inter and Napoli have faced each other 158 times in Serie A: the Nerazzurri lead the way with 70 wins, while there have been 47 Napoli victories and 41 draws. Napoli have managed just one win in their last 12 league meetings with Inter (5 draws, 6 defeats). Since 2020, Inter are the team the Partenopei have lost to most often and beaten the fewest times.
The last three Serie A encounters between the two sides have ended 1-1, demonstrating the recent balance between them. Inter have scored in each of their last 14 league games against Napoli – their longest-ever scoring streak against the Campania side. The last goalless draw dates back to March 11, 2018, at San Siro.
Inter head into the match on the back of four straight Serie A wins. Only Bayern Munich and Marseille currently boast longer streaks among Europe’s top five leagues. Across all competitions, the Nerazzurri have seven consecutive victories, their best run since the record-breaking 13-win stretch between January and March 2024. Five of those seven have come with clean sheets – as many as in their previous 23 matches combined.
Since the start of last season, Inter have recorded 12 away clean sheets, including four in their last five trips. No side in Europe’s top five leagues has done better over the same span (Atalanta are level). In attack, nine different players have scored this season, more than any other team in Serie A. Inter also lead the league for shots (14) and goals (3) created from high pressing and attacking recoveries, a clear reflection of Chivu’s team’s intensity and winning mentality.
Ange-Yoan Bonny’s brilliant run continues as he develops his status as one of Inter’s key players. With two goals and three assists, the French forward has been directly involved in all of Inter’s last five Serie A goals.
Since Serie A returned to a 20-team format in 2004/05, Bonny is the only Inter player to have registered at least three goals and three assists in his first seven league appearances. Only two players can boast that record in Serie A this season: Bonny and Nico Paz.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu has often made his mark on this fixture: three goals against Napoli in Serie A, all scored wearing the Inter shirt. No team has conceded more to the Turkish midfielder.
Since arriving in Italy in 2017/18, Inter’s No. 20 has converted 28 of his 29 penalties at club level: 25 out of 26 with Inter and 3 out of 3 with AC Milan.
Nicolò Barella embodies Inter’s intensity and spirit. Alongside Patrizio Masini, he has the most recoveries (42) in this Serie A campaign.
The Napoli match could mark a special milestone: 300 appearances for Inter across all competitions – a figure that reflects his quality, consistency, and deep bond with the Nerazzurri colours.
Among the standout performers at the start of the season is Federico Dimarco, increasingly decisive in the attacking phase. The Inter wing-back has created more big chances (11) than any other player across Europe’s top five leagues. In Serie A, only Nico Paz has produced more total chances (22). His blend of intensity, precision, and vision makes him one of Inter’s most vital playmakers.
Napoli, led by Antonio Conte, have made a strong start to the season, earning 15 points from seven games (five wins and two defeats). The Partenopei have scored twelve goals and conceded seven, sitting second in the table alongside Inter and Roma. Their Serie A campaign began with a 2–0 win away to Sassuolo, followed by victories over Cagliari, Fiorentina, and Pisa. The first setback came at San Siro against AC Milan, before a 2–1 home win over Genoa and a narrow defeat to Torino. In the Champions League, Napoli have earned three points from their opening three fixtures: a 2–1 home win against Sporting Lisbon followed by two losses, 2–0 away to Manchester City and 6–2 against PSV.
For the game against Inter, Conte is expected to line up his team in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Milinkovic-Savic in goal; Di Lorenzo, Beukema, Buongiorno, and Spinazzola in defence; Gilmour in the holding role; Politano, De Bruyne, Anguissa, and McTominay across midfield; and Lucca as the lone striker.
