There has been speculation for some time about whether Manuel Neuer could return to the German national team to play at this summer's World Cup.
The 40-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper has consistently dismissed the reports, but with the World Cup less than a month away, there now appears to be a real chance he could come out of international retirement for the tournament.
According to Sky Germany, Neuer was included in the 55-man squad that the German Football Association had to submit to FIFA by Monday.
The German outlet further reports that Neuer recently held talks with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann about a possible return for the World Cup.
No final decision has been made yet but is expected soon, with Nagelsmann set to announce his squad on May 21.
With Marc-André ter Stegen having suffered multiple injuries in recent years, Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann has been Germany’s main goalkeeper since Neuer retired from international duty after Euro 2024. Whether Baumann will keep his place for the World Cup is now in serious question.
